Luxury day trips from Adelaide

By Aimee Knight

Conveniently positioned between beaches, vineyards, rivers and rolling hills, Adelaide is the ideal home base for any number of daytrips. We’ve handpicked a selection of high-end tours and mini-breaks, all easily reached in an hour or two of the CBD. Whether you’re yearning for adventure, relaxation or indulgence, you’ll find a luxury experience here to kickstart your wanderlust.

  1. The Tailor

The team at The Tailor has been handcrafting luxury travel experiences out of their South Australian headquarters for almost 20 years. They offer a range of unique itineraries to destinations across the Barossa, Clare Valley, Kangaroo Island and beyond. Visit the historic Hutton Vale estate, celebrated for its boutique produce and wine, or go behind the scenes at the R.M. Williams factory on a VIP tour that’s exclusive to The Tailor. You’ll also be treated to lunch at Kidman Flower Co, a twelve-hectare native flower farm in the Adelaide Hills. Get in touch with The Tailor’s ‘Travel Designers’ who will recommend a daytrip to suit your tastes.

  2. Chinta Air

See the South Australian landscape from a whole new angle aboard a Chinta Air charter flight. Your highly trained pilot – and personal tour guide – can have you soaring to Ceduna or floating over the Flinders Ranges within two hours of departing Adelaide Airport. Cut the queues and reach locations that aren’t serviced by major nor regional airlines. Visit myriad remote spots in a single day, without the worry of an outback breakdown, and arrive home again in time for tea.

  3. Two Hands Wines

A decadent cellar door experience awaits you at Two Hands Wines in the Barossa. Spend a day sipping from the Picture Series and showroom exclusives, and learn from the expert staff on-hand at Kraehe House. If you’re really eager to understand the art of winemaking, don’t miss South Australia’s most comprehensive vineyard experience. From the Moppa Hills to Seppeltsfield, taste Two Hands selections while standing on the land that produced them. Go on a chauffeured adventure in a luxury Land Rover and make your way to the Holy Grail, or craft your own bespoke daytrip that showcases the Barossa’s best views.

  4. Daimler Tours

This family-owned business offers private tours of South Australia’s finest wine regions in a rare 1962 Daimler Limousine. This is the ideal daytrip for those partial to a chardonnay, with a side of mid-century elegance. Chauffeur and raconteur John will treat you like royalty (Daimlers were the vehicle of choice for Royal Tours in the 1960s, after all) as you cruise through the Barossa, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Hahndorf and more. Swing by prestigious wineries such as Henschke, Penfolds and Seppeltsfield, enjoy afternoon tea at Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, and lots more in between.

  5. Ambler Touring

Ramble down to South Australia’s southern coasts with Ambler Touring. Choose from single day tours of the Coorong, the Fleurieu Peninsula, the Murray River or Kangaroo Island. Discover the natural wonder of Admirals Arch, Seal Bay and beyond with the Kangaroo Island Explorer package. Cruise the Coorong on an adventurous boat trip that takes in the Goolwa Barrage, the Murray Mouth and stops at sites of Indigenous significance. Or take an intimate trip (maximum six people) to see the state’s best beaches, breweries and cheese-makers while exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Rudi and Jessica are the father-daughter team behind Hills Luxury Day Tours. They come prepared with all the insider knowledge required to show you some of the region’s best-kept secrets, such as Sidewood Cellar Door and the picturesque Artwine vineyards. By the end of day, the flexible, customised tour will leave you feeling like one of their family.

Soak in the scenic splendour of Victor Harbor with a personalised itinerary from Adelaide Chauffeur and Tours. Departing the CBD at the very reasonable hour of 9am, your private driver will deliver you to South Australia’s favourite seaside town. Design a day of sightseeing on nearby Granite Island, sample local produce in the town centre, or make some furry friends at Urimbirra Wildlife Park. They’ve curated a range of full-day and half-day foodie experiences, accessible under an hour’s drive from Adelaide. Two and three day specialist packages are also available for those who’d like to try every drop on offer in South Australia’s premier wine region.
