The best spots to propose in South Australia

By Aimee Knight

If a marriage proposal is on the cards, then why not surprise and delight your loved one by popping the question in a very special way.

  1. Arkaba

Let the rugged scenery and ancient legacy of Arkaba set the mood with its untamed beauty. If you are wild at heart, consider taking a bushwalk to pop the question atop the undulating Flinders Ranges, surrounded by 24,000 hectares of privacy.

This sprawling property, founded in the 1850s, is now a wildlife conservancy. The restored homestead accommodates up to 10 guests at a time, but can be reserved solely for you and your significant other. Without wi-fi, TVs or telephones, Arkaba offers the ultimate in intimacy and seclusion.

“We did have an engagement at our property recently, and a unique outdoor wedding celebration not that long ago,” says Anna, an Arkaba reservations consultant.

“If you propose at Arkaba, you won’t have crowds applauding but you will get the most genuine experience, when the red glow comes down the ranges at sunset and all you can see are majestic mountain peaks and raw, glorious nature. The mood is set, the breeze is fresh and there’s a lot of love in the air.”

  2. Waterfall Gully

Enveloped in a lush canopy of perennial green, Waterfall Gully provides a distinctive backdrop for your special moment. Just 10 kilometres from the Adelaide city centre, the 18-metre waterfall flows all year round, evoking peace and composure – the perfect foundation for any marriage.

After showering your special someone with love and affection, celebrate with a glass of champagne in the adjacent restaurant Utopia, situated in a heritage-listed, century-old stone chalet.

  3. Yorkes Uncorked

Put your plans into the hands of paid professionals with Yorkes Uncorked. Amanda, Jo and their attentive team can craft a truly memorable occasion, with the best produce available on the Yorke Peninsula. They collaborate with local suppliers and services to curate an experience that suits your personal tastes.

On the foreshore of a secluded beach, Amanda sets the scene. “Red roses, candles, and exquisite surrounds, complete with cashmere rugs, cushions and soft music,” she says. “An award-winning chef provides a sumptuous feast with accompanying sparkling wine.

“You’re set to surprise your loved one with an evening you’ll always remember. Your time, your space, the love of your life, and that precious moment when she says ‘yes’.”

  4. Barossa Valley Ballooning

Hearts are sure to soar as you take in the picturesque Barossa from the vantage point of a hot air balloon. Lovebirds will swoon for the sunrise views and tranquil mood, coasting over some of South Australia’s finest wine country for an hour. On touching down, you’ll be treated to a champagne breakfast at the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort.

Barossa Valley Ballooning is a family-owned affair, operated by wife and husband Barbara and Michael.

  5. RoofClimb Adelaide Oval

Gazing down on the capital from the apex of Adelaide Oval, you’ll feel like the entire city is yours. Whether you want daylight views rolling out to the Hills, or vivid sunset colours at twilight, the RoofClimb experience is inimitable. Moving across the Western Stand to the Riverbank Stand and back again, the climb lasts about 90 minutes. Round off the adventure with a three-course meal at Hill of Grace Restaurant. Moving across the Western Stand to the Riverbank Stand and back again, the climb lasts about 90 minutes. 6. Adventure Bay Charters

Start your matrimonial journey with a marine adventure tour on the Eyre Peninsula. While cage diving with great white sharks might not set an amorous mood, Adventure Bay Charters’ sea lion experience is sure to give you the warm fuzzies. It worked for Aaron and Serena.

Playfully called “the puppies of the sea”, your frolicking new friends leap, twist and backflip through their underwater playground. It’s a joyous sight to behold, and great practice for when you welcome a fur baby into your own home.

  7. Mortlock Chamber, State Library of South Australia

The enchanting Mortlock Chamber will appeal to old-fashioned romantics. With its ornate wooden furniture, wrought iron features and warm golden lighting, it’s not surprising this was ranked among the world’s 20 most beautiful libraries by Travel + Leisure magazine.

Located in the heart of the city, this wing of the State Library is steeped in history. Its countless nooks and crannies house 23,000 antique tomes and local memorabilia. More than 130 years young, the chamber has stacks of wisdom to offer its devotees. Fall under the spell of Mortlock Chamber and your engagement will surely be one for the books.

  8. Remarkable Rocks, Kangaroo Island

Once you’ve got the remarkable rock to place on your partner’s ring finger, head for the serenity of Kangaroo Island. That’s where Adelaide couple Ryan and Michelle first holidayed together in 2015. They fell in love with KI, but that’s only half the story.

“Our favourite place in all of KI was Remarkable Rocks,” Ryan says. “We sat there for hours admiring the views and feeling the ocean breeze, arm in arm. It was there and then, sitting on those rocks, that I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with Michelle.

“We went back to KI again in January 2016. We woke up early and drove to Remarkable Rocks before the crowds arrived. I sat Michelle down at the same spot, got down on one knee and asked her to marry me – thankfully she said ‘yes’! We had a sing and a dance to celebrate, then simply enjoyed our special moment in a breathtakingly beautiful place.”
